Evolution of Religions

Shared by Dr. Syed Ehtisham

Human beings are understood to have evolved to the current
brain size about half a million years ago, enabling them to have bipedal
locomotion, coherent speech, power of analysis, greater social
organization, and imagination.
The earliest available record and evidence are of female
dominated hunter-gatherer society, evolving over thousands of years into
tribal, feudal-monarchical-mercantile and capitalist stages.
Over time, the concept of divine developed and passed through
the stages of polytheism, which initially had more or less equal
representation of male and female forms. With the advent of agricultural
mode of production, matriarchal society gave way to male domination.
Initially gods were believed to be just more powerful beings
than humans, but over time they grew more and more distant and different
from the ordinary mortal. Bhagwan among Hindus was initially head of the
tribe who gave away ‘Bhag (portion). Monotheistic creeds followed, which
conforming to the norms of the time, had only male Gods .Initially the
monotheistic God kept close personal relations with the prophets. God of
Moses (He had actually to compete with and overcome rivals) used to invite
him for regular parleys. Jesus did not talk to him directly and his
followers were reduced to award him a biological relationship with the
Almighty. The prophet of Islam had only one audience when he rose to the
seventh heaven on a flying horse named “Burraq”; Archangel Gabriel was the
appointed emissary for all exchanges.
Accounts of the earliest beliefs and their origin are at
best speculative. Humans needed explanation of and protection from natural
elements. It was probably a coincidence that a prediction of member of a
tribe came true; drought ended or the crop was good or a fire died down.
The person, pushed to explain how she/he knew, might have claimed a special
relationship with gods. The profession of clergy probably started that way.
People saw other people die. It made them wonder about their own
death. At the deepest subconscious they thought of their personal unknown
future. The unknown was pregnant with curiosity and fear.
Individuals with perceived access to the ‘divine’ explained the future on
the basis of their inner experience. They gave their views to humankind
about virtue and vice, about heaven and hell, about salvation and
damnation; a concept named Faith for a collectively peaceful co-existence.
Thus religions were created.
Priests were close to the spiritual personages. They interpret and
propagate the teachings of the ‘divine’.  They exercise the greatest
influence upon devout believers.
With advancement of knowledge and ability to
explain many natural phenomena on scientific and rational basis, it
became necessary to invent the ultimate unknown which was the first cause,
the un-created creator; we have the God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and
Muhammad, peace be upon all of them.
Conformists, challenged by detractors, claim that religion
inspired people and offers solace, when nothing else could. Well opium is a
great analgesic; further it can be chemically changed into morphine which
is an even better pain reliever. But it can be converted into Heroin as
well, which is highly addictive. Obviously opium production has to  be
regulated but you can not trust an addict as a regulator. The question
arises; why trust the clergy, mullahs, pundits and rabbis to regulate
religious practices

Reasons Why Nations Prosper or Fail

December, 2015 Monthly Get Together Lecture/Presentation by Dr. Shoeb Amin

Reasons Why Nations Prosper or Fail

The above was the topic of my talk at the Thinkers’ Forum meeting of 12/2015.

It is hard to incorporate everything said in a 30-40 minute talk but I’ll try.

I started out by taking the example of a city called Nogales which straddles the US/Mexico border. The northern half, in the state of Arizona has 3 times the household income, higher life expectancy, low crime, most teenagers in school and most adults are H. S. graduates; people have reliable public services, have programs like Medicare, WIC, social security and finally decent law and order. And even though the govt. is inefficient and somewhat corrupt, the political institutions are more robust, and people have it in their hands to change govt.

Just cross the fence into the southern half, in the state of Sonora, Mexico and the household income is 1/3 that of the northern neighbor, most teens are not in school, most adults are not H. S. graduates, life expectancy shorter, higher crime, poor public services, no Medicare and weak political institutions, much higher corruption. And Nogales, Mexico is more prosperous than the rest of Mexico, because of its proximity to Nogales, USA, because a lot of its income is derived from residents of the northern half

(Overall the per capita GDP of the US is 10 times more than that of Mexico) Which begs the question: Why are places so similar and in proximity to each other so different in their level of prosperity? The following are some of the reasons; you may attribute different levels of importance to each but they are all factors that contribute to the differences.

1) Geography: Jared Diamond in his book “Guns, Germs and Steel” and his other writings thinks your location on the globe – the latitude – is the most important factor. People in tropical climates will be poorer than those in temperate climates. The reasons, in brief, are:

  1. a) Hot temps make people lazy,
  2. b) There are more infections like malaria in tropics and most people are not at 100% efficiency because of frequent illnesses and
  3. c) The tropical soil is not as productive. All true reasons but some countries have overcome latitude; Singapore, one of the most prosperous countries in the world is in the tropics, so is Botswana and many ancient cultures like the Aztecs, Mayans, Incas, Angkor thrived in tropical climates.

2) Geology: By which I mean natural resources like oil, gold, and diamonds. Qatar has the highest per capita GDP in the world from oil revenues. Some at the meeting thought geology and geography are the same thing (yes and no).

3) Cultural: Some have claimed that the Protestant work ethic and the values that go with it have made Europe so prosperous. May be, but there are not many Protestants in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong  and more recently China.

4) Ignorance: That the leaders of some countries do not know how to make their countries prosperous. This is not a very valid reason in our times when knowledge from a distant country can be acquired very easily.

5) Political & Economic Systems:  In their book “Why Nations Fail”  Acemoglu and Robinson argue these to be THE most important factors. They define two basic economic systems: “extractive” and “inclusive” economic systems. In the former, as in an old fashioned monarchy or in communism, the fruits of people’s labor goes to the king/queen or the state, the workers have no incentive to work harder. In the “inclusive” systems, as in a capitalist democracy, people do have an incentive to work harder because they are the main beneficiaries of that hard work. There are many examples of these two systems creating different levels of prosperity; the best is that of South and North Korea. The same geography but very different economic and political models and thus prosperity levels.

6) National IQ: This refers an estimated average IQ of all the inhabitants of a country. This theory is postulated by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen in their two book: a) IQ and wealth of nations (2002) and IQ and global wealth. These books are hard to get because they deal with a very sensitive topic but I have the link to the abstract.

Click to access national-iq.pdf

In these books they argue that prosperity and many other desirable indicators of quality of life correlate directly with the AVERAGE IQ of the nation. There has been criticism of their work, in their methods and tests used to determine IQ’s and the number of persons used to arrive at the average IQ and they have improved their methodology in response to that criticism in their second book. I am including a link of a list of national IQ levels along with a list of per capita GDP (compiled by the World Bank). I’ll leave it to the reader to decide what role a national IQ may play in a country’s prosperity. My personal opinion is, in spite of the objections raised that IQ tests are a Western creation that intelligence is not just a number etc. IQ’s role is not an insignificant one.

Also included is a comparison of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, both part of the same island yet so different. Just look at the demographics.

Imagination and picture of God (God & Concept of God)

“Why Muslims Should Be Grateful To Trump” By Pankaj Mishra

Donald Trump has violated almost every rule of political and social decorum in recent months. His inflammatory rhetoric now resonates across the world, finding echoes among Hindu supremacists in India and far-right politicians in Europe. Trump and his vociferous supporters seem to be setting up rancorous conflicts within and between societies.

In the process, however, Trump has made a little-acknowledged, and even vigorously denied, phenomenon seem incontrovertible: Islamophobia, the prejudice that blames an ancient religion for the crimes of some present-day murderers and fanatics, and makes a diverse population of 1.5 billion people look suspect in the eyes of the rest.

This bigotry has flourished, largely unchecked, for some years now. It raised its grisly head in even proudly liberal New York during the controversy over the “Ground Zero Mosque” before running into someprincipled political opposition. The occasional resistance to it in the mainstream media — such as Ben Affleck’s exasperated response to Bill Maher, or Reza Aslan’s brisk education of a befuddled Fox News presenter — goes viral simply because it is so rare.

In a bizarre twist, the very people who promote, unwittingly or not, Islamophobia — such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who condemns Islam as a “nihilistic, destructive death cult” — also vehemently deny its existence. They claim that they’re being attacked unfairly for wanting to reform Islam, which is evidently incompatible with Western values of democracy and human rights.

But a fundamental incoherence marks the rhetoric of those auditioning for the role of Islam’s Martin Luther. They never quite clarify what it means to “reform” a religion as variously and extensively practiced as Islam. They assume that Islam is a cult of doctrine-bound believers, like Communism; and, like the Leninists of the past, they hope that ruthless assertion of the correct party line, preferably laid down by them, will discipline all 1.5 billion adherents.

The Islamophobes also mash together complex political issues — Saudi-sponsored Wahhabism in Java, failures of Indian secularism in Kashmir, racial discrimination in Republican France — into a simple rhetorical question: Is inherently violent and intolerant Islam compatible with the modern world?

This quasi-accusation assumes that the modern world, whose record includes savage wars between secular imperialist powers and atheistic totalitarianisms, as well as genocides and devastating economic crises, was doing just great until it collided with a 7th century faith. The Islamophobes also conflate terrorism, a tactic used by people of all faiths and ideologies since it was patented by the Russian revolutionaries of the 19th century, with Islam. They point, as evidence, to murderous groups like al-Qaeda and Islamic State, which invoke Islam as their motivating force.

But this attempt to identify Islam’s allegedly vicious core — by taking the proclamations of fanatics at face value — merely begs some more questions. Much blood has been shed in the name of liberty, equality and fraternity since the Jacobins instituted the reign of terror. People invoking democracy and human rights as their motivating force have most recently caused havoc in the Middle East. Does that make those of us who believe in democracy the pathetic dupes of an inherently murderous faith?

But then the mills of Islamophobia do not need any intellectual precision or historical clarity. What keeps them churning is the paranoia of the rich as well as the unfocused fury and rampant frustration of citizens who feel left or pushed behind in highly unequal societies.

Many people live with dread in a world where all social, political and economic forces determining their lives seem opaque. They are prone to inventing “enemies” — socialists, liberals, an alien in the White House, Muslims — and then blaming them for their plight.

We should have been alerted to this phenomenon by the entwined history of anti-Semitism and demagoguery in the modern world. It starts with Voltaire’s furious denunciations of “barbarous” Jews and Judaism, and it enters its most depraved phase in the late 19th century when Jew-hatred became routine amid the political and economic traumas of middle and lower-middle classes in France and Germany.

Like anti-Semitism, Islamophobia breeds in the swamp of fear and insecurity that is truly the modern world for many people. In the hands of skillful and resourceful manipulators, it can turn into a very dangerous force, as we have now witnessed with Trump.
