Comments and Suggestions by Ann Rosenberg, a Participant at ICR Interfaith Meeting

Ms. Ann Rosenberg was present at the ICR Interfaith meeting and she has been writing some comments and suggestions to Mr. Noor Salik in e-mails. She has graciously allowed the Thinkers’ Forum USA to post excerpts of those e-mails. She has  Ed.D in Education and History from Columbia University. She is  author of ” Freudian Theory and American Religious Journals: 1900-1965” and has  published other articles. Although these suggestion are for ICR, but these are applicable to all Islamic Centers. Please forward this post to members of other Islamic Centers. Please post your comments. Discussion is the best way to find better solutions. Here are e-mails excerpts in reverse order.

“I hope that you won’t mind another observation.  Indian Americans are active in RC politics and have successfully fielded candidates.  Volunteering presence at the county and town headquarters is another way to establish a positive American presence.”

“Other ways to improve and raise the profile of the Muslim community in RC are by encouraging parents, particularly mothers, to become active in the Parent Teacher or Parent Organizations in the children’s schools by attending monthly meetings, participating in bake sales, assisting at spring fairs, book fairs and assisting teachers by chaperoning school trips to museums, zoos, nature centers etc.  Some parents assist in the schools in additional ways.  Both parents can volunteer as Boy and Girl Scout leaders and as coaches in tee shirt and little league baseball and softball teams sponsored by the towns.  There may also be a soccer league.  These sports activities are provided for girls and for boys.  People who have free time because they are retirees or housewives who have grown children can volunteer at Nyack and Good Samaritan Hospitals.  They dispense passes to visitors, push wheelchairs, talk with people whose relatives are undergoing surgery and do clerical work among other activities.   There are soup kitchens in Nyack.  Members of the mosque could volunteer to serve brunch or dinner which is cooked by the organizations.  They could talk with the clients.  The Nyack clergy would know the names of the contact people.

Do you participate along with churches and synagogues in giving night time winter shelter to homeless men?  One of the clergy people in the Nyack area could describe the program to you.

“Other suggested activities for increased community involvement: platter of sweets to town senior citizen centers for appropriate Muslim holidays (contact Rockland County Office of the Aged), sweets or little parties for residents of housing for the mentally and physically disabled (contact RC Office for the handicapped), The residents and their families will never forget these acts of kindness, volunteering to serve meals and and push wheelchairs in the hospitals along with synagogue members on Christmas and on Easter enabling Christians to spend the holiday, with their families, Jewish and Christian religious institutions would similarly fill in for Muslims if notified.”

“Please share all unless I specifically restrict which would be unlikely.

“Questions involved: jihad, Islam and Christians, veiled women, women drivers, women reading the Koran, general treatment of Muslim women in Kerala

Comment: In my opinion the afternoon was very successful.  The hospitality was warm.  The presentations were carefully prepared, and there was a genuine desire for improved mutual understanding.    I think that sometimes it is better to understate than to overstate,  In the Western tradition historical evidence or primary sources are offered to support statements such as the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution being based upon Sharia law.  How did  Thomas Jefferson or James Madison become  study Sharia law? Which books were found in their libraries?

Secondary sources such as a lecture by a professor would not be convincing evidence.  Perhaps a more accurate statement would be that US historical documents are in conformity with Sharia law.  Citing the Sharia law referenced would be helpful and convincing.”

Discussion Meeting of February 19, 2012

The discussion meeting of Thinkers’ Forum USA, was held on February 19, 2012 at Dr. Shoeb Amin’s office at 48 New Main Street,Haverstraw, N.Y. The meeting was attended by Mr. Mehfooz Rahman, Dr R. Chowdhury, Dr. N. Elahi, Dr. I.Moeen, Dr. F. Sheikh, Mr. N. Salik, Mr. Ajaz Uddin Shah, Mr. M. Ashraf, Dr S. Amin, Mr. A. Ahmad, Mr. I.Bokhari, Mr. Z. Khizer and N. Kidwai.

The first topic of the meeting was “Holism”. Few days before the meeting, Mr. Mirza I. Ashraf has already e-mailed the article to the participants. After introduction, Mr. Mirza I. Ashraf gave his presentation, and because the topic was very complex , lot of questions were asked. Mirza Sahib graciously answered all the questions and made the discussion more interesting by telling short historic stories. Although It was felt that the speaker was interrupted too many times, nevertheless the complex discussion  was very absorbing and two hours  flew by very quickly.

After the main discussion, there was exchange of ideas about how to make the format more organized. The general consensus was to keep each presentation to last about 15-20 minutes and followed by the Q &A period of 20-25 minutes. If the topic is lengthy and complex, the presentation shall be for about 45 minutes, followed by Q&A period of about 45 minutes. The moderator shall make sure that all the participants shall have a chance to express their opinion and ask the questions.

The discussion on first topic ended at 5:30 P.M., and because of lack of time, second topic was not discussed. Informal discussions continued during the tea and snack time. The meeting ended at 6:30 P.M.

THE NEXT MEETING IS SCHEDULED ON SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2011 AT 3:00 P.M.

Prophet Mohammad’s letter to the Christians

Prophet Mohammad’s letter to the Christians

A very important Islamic principle, unfortunately misunderstood and
wrongly practiced by many so called Muslims around the Globe.

The Greek Orthodox monks living in the monastery at the foot of Mount
Sinai have in their possession many precious documents going back many
centuries. Their library is one of the finest in the world for ancient
manuscripts. One of the most precious documents of all is the copy of a
letter narrated by Prophet Muhammad  to the monks in the year
628. Its contents might come as a surprise to many, since in this
precious manuscript Muslims are exhorted to protect the Christians
living within their midst. The words are so beautiful that we repeat
them in full here:

•This is a message from Mohamed ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those
who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.•Verily I, the
servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians
are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything
that displeases them.•No compulsion is to be on them.•Neither are their
judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their
monasteries.•No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage
it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.•Should anyone
take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey
HisProphet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter
against all that  they hate.•No one is to force them to travel or to
oblige them to fight.•The Muslims are to fight for them.•If a female
Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her
approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to
pray.•Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be
prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.•No
one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last
Day(The end of the world – Judgement day.).
It should be quite clear from this that, far from being a threat, Islam
is actually the guardian of the Christian presence in the Middle East.

These words of the Prophet Mohammed should be made known to Muslims and
non-Muslims throughout the world.

Blog Suggestions And Comments

Lets not overload the project.  Drs. Fayyaz, Shoeb and Noor have given us a fair start.  The challenge is to build a sufficient core and mission.  Links can always be made at any time and pictures can be changed.  The forum has to retain a focus lest we drown it with too much content and little substance.

Excellent site. Congrats to Dr. Fayyaz Sheikh.
