At this stage it is irrelevant what kind of Pakistan Jinnah or other founding fathers wanted. At this stage of modernity a theocratic state cannot survive. It has to be secular with separation of religion and state in order to move forward otherwise you will be stuck in stagnation.

  2. I agree with Dr. Fayaz Sheikh’s view as stated above. Secularism is the answer for Muslim countries. Secularism does not means giving up your religion. It only means separation of State and religion. You can still freely practice your religion the way you want. You can go to your mosques or churches or temples and pray, fast and recite whatever you want. As long as you follow the law and pay your taxes you are OK. Secularism will also automatically take care of extremism and sectarian violence.

How amazing is it in USA, UK, Europe and other western countries where peoples of different religion live side by side in peace and security without any discrimination, and can also contest in election and be a part of the government.

Millions of Muslims have migrated to Western counties and are enjoying a good life here. If secularism was a bad idea why they would yearn to come and live here?

The big question is “who will bel the cat?” In Muslim countries the general population is ignorant and uneducated. The majority does not understand the usefulness of secularism. I think Quaid-e-Azam and his close friends understood it, Sir Syed and Allama Iqbal understood it, and many educated people understand it. But the Mullahs and the general public do not understand it.

  3. Brevity is the essence of wit indeed. An excellent summation on Secularism by Zaki Sabih Saheb. What I said in six long pages, Mr Zaki summed it up in 4 short paragraphs. Well said Zaki Saheb.
